Sunday 6th March 2011Spring is in the air!
As 15 warmly clad riders met at Loomies, a few long lost riders, Richard Budd, Johann (Harleyman) and Lindsey Grady, came out of the woodwork to receive teasing from the regulars. The riders had déjà vu as they waited for Lindsey to finish her late breakfast before setting off. Heading towards Winchester and through to Wherwell the pace was comfortable, with little waiting around – well apart from the stops to sort out radios! To everyone’s surprise the sun came out, suggesting a brilliant day was on the cards. Gemma’s route, with its technical B roads, took us through some beautiful countryside with plenty of twisty roads and pretty villages. After a tour of Marlborough due to a wayward SatNav the pace quickened as the charging hoard scattered druids around the Avebury stones.
Gemma’s coup was finding a fantastic pub with gorgeous views over the countryside. The pub offered a delicious roast which was enjoyed by all, with the exception of Paula who was fasting. We all marvelled at her conviction as we scoffed our lovely lunches; don’t think Panos will be converting! As we chatted, we thought about friends who may been put off by Saturday’s chilly weather, and there were many fond memories of Gavin, whose exuberance and humour will be sorely missed by the group.
After lunch, the route took us to the B4507 across Lambourn Downs where Gemma unleashed the five Dark Side riders who eagerly set off along the tricky country road to Wantage, appreciating their moment of freedom. The progressive pace continued along the wonderful B4494 with all the riders enjoying this lovely road up over the Ridgeway and down through the woods into Newbury.
We finished at Nelson’s Diner where most people’s lunch had settled sufficiently for them to enjoy a pudding or two. It was a great day to be on a motorbike and luckily there were no breakdowns or dramas and no need to contact International Rescue (Martin) who is in Columbia! Thanks to Gemma for organising a memorable ride and to Andy for back marking.
